Ross (formerly, Sunnyside) is a small incorporated town in Marin County, California, just north of San Francisco. Ross is located 1.5 miles west-southwest of San Rafael, at an elevation of 36 feet. The population of Ross is around 2,500 residents. The town is bordered by Kentfield and Greenbrae to the east, Larkspur to the south and San Anselmo to the north.

In 1857, James Ross (1812–1862) bought Rancho Punta de Quentin. Ross, a Scot who had arrived in San Francisco from Australia in 1848 made his fortune in the wholesale liquor business, set up a trading post called “Ross Landing”. Ross has some of the most expensive housing in Marin County and some rental can fetch $20,000 – $30,000 a month. Ross has strict zoning laws that limit new construction and development. The excellent schools, luxury estates and lovely streets enhance the value of Ross real estate. Downtown Ross with it’s small park is refered to as Ross Common. It features restaurant, a few shops and the Post Office. This is a meeting place for locals as there is no mail delivery within Ross.
